She is particularly interested in the power dynamics across class, gender, and generations, as well as the ways technology shapes identities and relationships. Her work has been developed with The Playwrights Realm, Great Plains Theatre Commons, Et Alia Theater, and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She has been recognized as a runner-up for the Jane Chambers Award, a finalist for the Alliance Theatre/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Award, and a regional winner (The Americas) of the BBC International Radio Playwriting Competition.

Clara Zhang is an interdisciplinary theatre maker and a Pre-Registered Drama Therapist with the North American Drama Therapy Association. Moving between performance creation, trauma-informed research, and collective ritual, she creates work that examines migration, women’s labor, and family memory. Her devised project To Crack Mountains reimagines the Chinese myth of a daughter splitting open a sacred mountain to rescue her mother.
Clara’s practice unfolds in the liminal spaces between art and growth, the personal and the communal, the real and the mythic. She views the rehearsal room as both an archaeological site and a sacred space where narratives can be rewritten and homecomings can begin. Clara has presented at the Odin Teatret Transit Festival, the ICAT Creative Arts Therapies Conference, and the NYU Drama Therapy Symposium.
