What compels people to cross mountains and seas to another country, another continent, and another culture to find their true selves? What are the journeys we take to find home and belonging?
Written by Lilong Liu, June is the First Fall tells the story of Don, a gay Chinese man, who returns home to Hawaii to rediscover missing memories of his family that he moved away from. This return opens up wounds that never healed, revealing the struggles in this family to find love, acceptance, and belonging.

" There's so much to say about why this play resonated. But amidst the emotions and tears the characters brought up for me, one thing stood out. Which is that while we may contextualize the major decisions in our lives within the constraints of options we had, and not regret the moves we make, the decisions we take in the less-than-ideal options the world offers, we can still acknowledge the price we have had to pay. To hold the weight and loss. To wonder about the ship that sailed and the other lives we could have lived. And the insatiable longings that the passage of time and transience of life leave us with."

"Watching June is the First Fall I was reminded of how when l was young many of my worst fights with my parents were in the car, where l would be trapped with no escape. Now as an adult in my 40s, things are very different; a car ride is a place to connect, to catch up, the beginning of a trip or a farewell until next time. You can say so much because you are cocooned in this space together apart from the world outside. This is also why I love giving rides to my friends. When the journey ends, so does the conversation, waiting for the next opportunity to pick of the threads and continue."
