First Steps into Acting

Course Description

Dive into the world of acting with our introductory course, First Steps into Acting, led by Iveliz Martel. This course is designed for anyone interested in exploring the fundamental techniques of acting, offering a supportive environment to uncover the craft's essentials. 


This course culminates in a public showing, where you'll have the opportunity to showcase what you've learned in front of family and friends. Whether you're new to acting or looking to refresh your skills, join us to take that first step on your acting journey.

Course Objectives

  1. Introduce participants to foundational acting techniques.
  2. Teach the principles of text analysis: the basics of beats, given circumstances, objectives, obstacles, actions, and tactics.
  3. Enable participants to explore and interpret monologues, gaining a deep understanding of the character’s motivations.
  4. Use voice exploration exercises to help students use their voices effectively to express intentions and construct characters.
  5. Guide participants through body exploration exercises to develop the physical life of the character.

June 15, 23, 29 and July 6, 20

250 dollars

Meet the Instructor

Iveliz Martel (She/Her): Actor & Journalist

Iveliz is a Chilean actor who recently graduated from the MFA in Acting program at the UW School of Drama. Iveliz is also a science journalist and has developed a career as a radio journalist in Chile where she interviewed public figures and scientists. She is passionate about using her acting training to provide tools for public speaking to members of the immigrant community whose voices are not usually heard. Some of her acting credits include Justice Salvo in The Merry Wives of Windsor at Seattle Shakespeare, Alegrías in Chalk at Yun Theater, Cassandra in The Oresteia at the UW School of Drama, and Buda Errante—a solo show created by herself along with Bradley Wrenn.
