Acting Techniques and Public Speaking for Diverse Voices

Course Description

Tailored for the immigrant community, this course melds the fundamentals of acting with public speaking techniques. Participants will work on voice and body language, empowering them to articulate themselves with confidence both on stage and in day-to-day interactions. At the end of the course, there will be a public showing where you can invite your friends and family to see your work!

Course Objectives

Introduce participants to foundational acting techniques.
Strengthen public speaking skills emphasizing body awareness, vocal power, and clarity.
Share the art of storytelling, helping participants identify what they want to communicate with their stories.
Create a supportive environment where members of the immigrant community can bond over shared experiences.

Course Duration

4 Weeks (One class per week, 1.5 hours each session)

Session one: Every Sunday, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Starting from 1/7/2024

Session two: Every Saturday, 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Starting from 1/6/2024

Instructor: Actor/Journalist

Iveliz Martel (She/Her)

Iveliz is a Chilean actor who recently graduated from the MFA in Acting program at the UW School of Drama. Iveliz is also a science journalist and has developed a career as a radio journalist in Chile where she interviewed public figures and scientists. She is passionate about using her acting training to provide tools for public speaking to members of the immigrant community whose voices are not usually heard. Some of her acting credits include Justice Salvo in The Merry Wives of Windsor at Seattle Shakespeare, Alegrías in Chalk at Yun Theater, Cassandra in The Oresteia at the UW School of Drama, and Buda Errante—a solo show created by herself along with Bradley Wrenn.

Cancellation Policy

Participant Cancellation:
- More than 2 weeks before the course start date: Full refund or credit towards a future course.
- 1-2 weeks before the course start date: 50% refund or full credit towards a future course.
- Less than 1 week before the course start date: No refund, but credit for 50% of the course fee towards a future course.
- After course commencement: No refunds or credits for cancellations or no-shows.

Course Cancellation by Organizer:
- If the course is canceled by the organizer for any reason (e.g., instructor unavailability, insufficient enrollment), participants are entitled to a full refund or the option to transfer their enrollment to a future course.

Special Circumstances:
- In cases of illness, emergency, or hardship, special considerations for refunds or rescheduling may be made at the discretion of the course organizers.

Notification:
- All cancellations or rescheduling requests must be made in writing via email or an established communication channel.
